Southern Pacific # 794

Back to Division 6 Home Page

On Sunday, January 24, 1999, Southern Pacific locomotive No. 794, made a sensational trip back to her old stomping grounds - the newly refurbished Southern Pacific depot in San Antonio.

This move marked the end of an era that began in 1957, the year No. 794 retired and was donated to the City of San Antonio. During her forty years

with the Southern Pacific she plied the rails from San Antonio to Corpus Christi to Del Rio to Houston to Kerrville and to many other locations too numerous to mention. No. 794 is an SP, MK5, 2-8-2 (Mikado) a freight hauler, a chore she accomplished with flying colors.

Her sister locomotive, No. 786, was refurbished several years ago and makes her home near Austin, Texas. No. 786 makes excursion runs between Cedar Park and Burnet, Texas.

The move from Maverick Park to the SP depot required lifting the 135 ton locomotive on to a flat-bed trailer. Once in place on the siding next to the depot, she was joined by her tender. A bit of trivia, No. 794's tender was a Vanderbilt tender with a "dog house" on the right side (engineers side). Very few tenders were built like this. The event was heralded by a release of steam and recorded train sounds.

WELCOME HOME OLD GAL!!!!!!!
